Pieces of me

I'm linking up with in the picture today.  In the picture is a self portrait journey for 2012.  I've challenged myself to do 52 this year.

I have to say that I never thought I'd be signing up to a self portrait project, much less sharing pictures of myself on the internet.  I HATE having my photo taken and will usually go to great lengths to avoid it.  But.  Last year I did Susannah Conway's Photo Meditations which introduced self portraiture ever so gently and really challenged my perceptions of it.  And I'm so glad it did.  I'm someone who loves photographing everyday life and the things and people around me.  Avoiding photographing myself is rather a glaring omission from my own life!

Once I realised that it doesn't have to be about your face and that it's not about beauty or vanity, I was encouraged to have a go.   And I've come to realise that it's the emotional and story-telling qualities of self portraiture that I love.  An expression, a point of view, a shift of focus can tell you so much about the person being photographed and is such an amazingly direct way to connect both with yourself and your viewer.

I have so much to learn about self portraits and this group is fantastically inspirational.  Follow the link and check out the other participants - it's truly awesome.

  1. On this journey with you. I really like the idea of a collage. ONE selfie was daunting enough to me :). That first shot tho, of the necklace and the opened shirt....exquisite!

  3. Becs - completely with you on hating to be in front of the camera. But you are showing me that it can be truly meaningful as a mode of self-expression. I am very slowly being convinced that I need to at least TRY this. Thank you for being courageous enough to share yourself in this way.

  5. Thanks for sharing. I signed up with In The Picture to push myself but have really struggled. Your words helped put more perspective on it. I especially love the photo of your face and neck, vulnerable and beautiful.

  6. These are so fantastic Becs! They work together perfectly in combination. I think I have realized the same thing - avoiding myself as a subject is a glaring omission. Thanks for sharing your perspective and these beautiful pieces of you!

  19. yes... that needs to be told... it's not about vanity! i know a lot of people don't understand that, and so it is self-portraiture is often criticized... one of the reasons i am reluctant to do it! i so get what you said here. well said.

i love this collage... and especially the photo of the necklace! great d.o.f. on that. i did something similar... included myself in my shot, but rather than focus on myself, i focused on the object in my hands... a book.

looking forward to seeing more of your s.p. images throughout the year!
