Photo-Heart Connection

I saw the sun peeking through the clouds and couldn't wait to jump out of the car and capture the light.   This is the photo that I knew would make it to Kat's photo-heart connection the minute I took it and it's a combination of things that make it special to me.

Firstly, I've seen and admired similar light capture in other people's photos so I was so excited to see it before me, waiting for me and my camera.  I love how the sun's rays are determinedly shining through the heavy grey clouds on what was otherwise a pretty dreary day weather-wise.

So a good start....gorgeous light.

But the time and place are special too.  This is Brighton where I spent a couple of school years and made some great friendships.  This was taken during our get together to celebrate 25 years of knowing each other (um, yikes!).

There is something about old friendship that is so comfortable with so much shared history.  Yet a lot has happened in 25 years.  It can be hard to move on from the person you were then and still fit into those relationships in the same way, being true to the person you are now.  Sometimes I have struggled with it.

But not on this day.  We settled back together, chatting, drinking tea.  Looking back at the past but sharing in our present and looking on to our futures too.

It felt like that little patch of sunlight had been sent just for us.

  10. What amazing, heavenly light! (and I can't help but notice that this is a great "horizontal bands" photo ;)I love how the sky and clouds seem to mirror the waves on the ocean.

A photo to connect with even without the great memories of place and friendship - that adds another layer of emotional resonance and meaning to an already suberb image.

  11. What a truly gorgeous photo Loved your heart photo connection story too. Gina is right, you don't often catch that moment where the clouds part and the sun shines on just one part of the water, lucky, lucky you.

  12. Becs,
I love your words and this image! This is what really resonated with me: "It can be hard to move on from the person you were then and still fit into those relationships in the same way, being true to the person you are now." How true this is. My own daughter and I have discussed this many times as she sorts through life and encounters the changes in friendships. I trust that your time with friends was good for the soul. I know this photo of the sunlight is good for mine!

  15. Good for you and your friends that you make the time to celebrate your younger selves as well as what you've become. As adults, it's too easy to make excuses for not going (...maybe next year) and soon the relationships dissolve. And then, to top all that, you have this wonderful image to remind you a wonderful time with friends. It doesn't get much better than that.

  16. Fantastic Becs! Isn't it wonderful when all of the elements come together like this - the mood, the light and your knowledge - to make a photo that touches your heart? I identify with what you wrote, so much. I feel a quiet acceptance and confidence of who you are today, in your words. Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo-heart connection.

  21. I love your image (I think you know I'm an ocean girl) and the story of your friend-reunion warmed my heart and made me a bit envious. It's hard to think of anyone I've known that long, outside of my own family. Your last sentence summed it up, I think: "It felt like that little patch of sunlight had been sent just for us." I'm sure it had!

  22. What a special image and connection! What you said is so true, "It can be hard to move on from the person you were then and still fit into those relationships in the same way, being true to the person you are now." I'm glad that on that day all fit together so well for you.

  23. Beautiful photo, heartfelt words. I agree with you sentiment of fitting in when you have changed. It speaks to the essential connection you had with your friends which goes beyond the changes years and experiences have imprinted on you. And there was that beautiful sun to light light the way.
