Silhouettes

Exploring with a Camera this month is looking at silhouettes.  Kat has some great examples and explanations so make sure you check them all out.

I love how silhouettes emphasise shape both to divert your eye and draw it in.

In this picture of a rainbow, the roof and tree tops are seen in silhouette, diverting attention away from them to focus on the colours in the rainbow.

A silhouette frame for the moon:

Here the silhouette forms both draw your eye to the shapes of the trees and the contrast with the colours in the sky:

Of course, silhouettes can also be the subject themselves and I love how the strong shapes of the London Eye and skyline are emphasised further by being in silhouette:

I love how silhouettes break the subject down to its absolute, simplest 2D shape leaving your mind to process the essence of the information in it's simplest form and in doing so allowing the space for imagination.

Looking around some of the other link ups, I realise how much I love seeing people in silhouette and yet I found virtually no examples in my own photography.  Definitely something to work on.

  1. Great observation Becs! It sounds like a fun goal, to find a few people in silhouette. Share with us when you get one or two! I agree with your statement, that silhouettes are "leaving your mind to process the essence of the information in it's simplest form and in doing so allowing the space for imagination." Great point. I love space for the imagination! Thanks for joining in with Exploring with a Camera this month.

    1. I had intended to go out and attempt some people silhouettes to include here but ran out of time. Definitely on my to do list, though! Thanks for hosting, I always learn something with Exploring.

  2. Great examples for this series, Becs! Your London skyline is wonderful! I also would like to do people silhouettes, but am a bit shy about photographing strangers.

    1. I was going to rope the family in to try it out - I'm a huge chicken when photographing strangers too!

  3. Becs - what gorgeous silhouette examples. My favorite is the "frame for the moon" - that deep blue twilight sky, highlighted by the silvery moon, is really stunning. And your rainbow capture is a fantastic find. Beautiful way to show off its colors.

None of my silhouettes have any people either - still too intimidated to try the whole "things that move" photography.

  4. Becs, these are all so good that I can't pick a favorite. You really nailed this exploration. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do when you do try to capture some human silhouettes.
