Senses and delights

I've been doing Susannah Conway's Exploring the Senses - an ecourse that she offered free with pre-orders of her book This I Know (thank you, Susannah!).  In the course we are encouraged to explore our senses further and it's amazing how your senses are heightened when you are really paying attention to them and challenging them a bit.  Yesterday when catching up on a few favourite blogs, I came across a post at Jamie Ridler Studios called Discovering Delight.  In it she has listed five of her favourite things under each sense.  She's also created a pdf to download and record your own with a challenge to savour some (or all of them!) this month (you can find the pdf here).  So, inspired by Susannah's ecourse and Jamie's post, here are some of my favourite 'delights' that I'll be seeking out over the next few weeks.

Smell:
fresh ground coffee
freshly laundered sheets, dried outside on the washing line
fresh cut grass
sunshine skin (you know, that holiday, sun-tan lotiony, sunny skin smell)
the sea
mimosa, lavender, honeysuckle, jasmine, lily of the valley (in fact pretty much any flower, although I guess they would be my absolute favourites!)

Sounds:
the sea
children laughing
silence
rain (when I'm inside dry and cosy!)
snow - what my dad used to call the silence of snow.  My brothers totally mocked him for it but I know exactly what he meant....do you?
crackles on a bonfire

Sight:
kites flying
bubbles
wide expanse of (empty) sandy beaches
my daughter bouncing on the trampoline when she thinks no-one is watching and her hair and limbs are flying all over the place!
colour

Taste:
peach bellinis (made properly with white peach juice, it really does matter!)
fresh coffee - my own special mix of espresso coffee and hazelnut roast
limes
chocolate - preferably sweet milk chocolate
marmite on toast
spicy prawns

Touch:
running sand through my fingers
barefeet in cool water
barefeet on grass - sums up the start of summer for me!
glass smoothed by the sea - I used to collect this as a child.  They must have really cleaned up the beaches because I always look, but I haven't really found any for years now.
the heat of the sun on my face
freshly laundered cotton sheets

So, what about you?   What's on your list?

  1. A friend sent me the *5 Delights for Each Sense* meme a few weeks ago, but I never got to do it. Thanks for the reminder! :)
Beautiful list you made, and a lovely mosaic to accompany it.

  2. How wonderful to really take the time to list out your sensory delights - to really think about them and in doing so, make the effort to bring them actively into your life. I'm with you on sheets dried on the line - that will take me right back to my childhood. And yes, the silence of snow - how beautiful to think of that muffling of every sound that a snowfall creates in such a way.

  3. Wonderful post and love your collage! I know so many times I take my five senses for granted! This is a great exercise I'll have to try!
