Photo Heart Connection

I always find the changing of seasons a bit tricky.  None more so that than the change from summer to autumn.  This has only been exacerbated now that we are at the beck and call of the school year.  Times marches on in regimented fashion and seems to have taken on a new relentlessness when all I really want it to do is slow down.

My current feelings seem rather encapsulated by this butterfly.  So beautiful.  So ephemeral.  Set free from the captivity of our butterfly garden but with a fragility that makes you almost fear what might be to come.

And yet, amidst all this I came upon this quote:

“..It occurs to me that the peculiarity of most things we think of as fragile is how tough they truly are. There were tricks we did with eggs, as children, to show how they were, in reality, tiny load-bearing marble halls; while the beat of the wings of a butterfly in the right place, we are told, can create a hurricane across an ocean. Hearts may break, but hearts are the toughest of muscles, able to pump for a lifetime, seventy times a minute, and scarcely falter along the way. Even dreams, the most delicate and intangible of things, can prove remarkably difficult to kill.”

In my desire to slow time down, I had forgotten the strength, the resilience, the beauty of this march of life.

  1. The photo really suits what you say so well! Yes, time does seem to march along in a regimented manner - either punctuated by school routine or work. The changing of the seasons can be a tricky time too for many people - especially as we move towards winter again. Yet there are so many wonderful things to look forward to as well! I love the quotation by Neil Gaiman on "Fragile Things".

  2. A perfect combination of quote and image... fragile but maybe stronger than we could ever dream. It calls to mind those amazing Monarch butterflies and their 1000+ mile migrations. Your reflections capture the backward glances that many of us make at this time of year, wondering where the summer that seemed so full of promise has gone, and what lies around the corner. By the way, I adore the name of your blog! I'm sure I'll be spending more time here.

  3. What a beautiful Photo Heart Connection this is Becs, and I know just how you feel about wanting to slow time a bit. I guess that since that is probably not going to happen, the best we can do is to enjoy every moment.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  12. Ah, I love this: "the strength, the resilience, the beauty of this march of life." Wow! So true. Resisting the flow of life doesn't get us anywhere. Thank you for reminding us in the Photo-Heart Connection this month. Sorry I'm so late, but you know where I was!
