Favourite Things 2014

We've had the brown paper parcels wrapped up with string and now here are a few of my other favourite things from this year:

It FINALLY stopped raining!

A day with blue skies is (almost) always a good day.

Classes and experimenting with light.  I've been a little remiss in keeping up with classes, especially at the end of this year but I miss it and I can feel the slow in creative growth.  So this goes straight back to the top of my priority list.

The colours of Southbank

London.  Every time I feel stuck or frustrated or jaded, a trip to London - even just for a wander - hits the restart button for me.

My girl.  Growing before my eyes and making me want to burst with pride.

Ruby slippers.

I finally got the shoes I have wanted since I first saw the Wizard of Oz.

The look out

Paris.  Through new eyes.

As Far as the Eye Can Sea

The beach.  Empty beaches in August in Northumberland.  Fresh air, happy kids, tea in an enamel mug, fish and chips and a trip to the 2p slotties.

Happy, happy things.

What are your favourites this year?

Tap Tap Tap.......hello?

Well, that was a little unexpected.  I didn't really mean to stop blogging for so long.  It turns out I am a truly terrible juggler and don't cope well with extra balls being hurled at me at all....

OK, so it's been a while and I'm not sure how to pick up again.  So, er, here's a random list of things in my head at the minute:

  • I'm am just getting over the 'nuts' bit of Christmas and in to the this is actually what it's about part.  Phew.
  • We have the best Christmas tree EVER this year.  I fear the needles are not keen to stick around but that's a problem for another day.
  • Have you got your word for next year yet?  I think I do, I'm just making sure...
  • Looking forward to doing Susannah's gorgeous workbook over the next few days.   I've done it for the last 3 years and I really recommend it (plus, it's totally free)
  • It's weirdly warm at the minute.  I sat outside by the river overlooking St Paul's Cathedral one day last week for Christmas drinks....in a coat but still, it is DECEMBER!
  • I'm currently making stollen for the first time.  Dan Lepard hasn't let me down so far...
  • Signing up for Kim's new class....anyone else?

Anyway, enough about me...how are you?

Views from the Top

Last week we were in Paris.  Generally the weather was lovely but the skies clouded over and darkened just as we made our way up the Eiffel Tower.  Despite living in Paris (a good few years ago now!), we'd never been up and it was really the Moo having it as number 2 on her visiting wish list (the Catacombs were number 1!) that made us do it.  I'd always been put off by the crowds and I'm not a massive fan of heights.  However we got there early (I managed to book tickets for the first lift up) and it was definitely worth it.

Next time we're there we might go up the Montparnasse Tower (concrete block above).  After all, if you're in it, you can't see it. ;)

All of the above were shot on my new Fuijifilm X100s.  I am still finding my way with it but it's love for sure.  And I didn't injure my shoulder carrying it around all the time.  Win!

Plus a venir.....

A Change of Pace

Land and Sea

The Pilgrimage {1}

The Pilgrimage {2}

The Beach

I seem to have been concentrating on still life a lot lately....and this weeks lesson at Be Still 52 reminded me of the world outside and how great it is to mix things up a bit.

I am not a natural landscape photographer and am often disappointed with what I come home with but when you are spending time with people you love, in a place as breathtaking as this, somehow it all falls into place.

These were all taken on holiday in Northumberland.  The pilgrim route to Holy Island across the sands and the final shot is on Snook Beach.  I think we saw maybe 4 other people.  At peak holiday season in August.  Quite a change for this suburbanite.  And a reinforcement that a change of pace can be just the creative adjustment you need. :)

Dear Friday

In the kitchen.

Dear Friday,

It's lovely to see you.  It's been a full on week but today I am feeling quiet and calm.  I can hear the rain outside and I'm actually quite glad of it as I have managed to do the things I need to do without getting wet and now I have the perfect excuse for some bread making and faffing in the kitchen.

It's hard to believe that there is only one more week til half term and next week promises to be busy too.  But for now I am savouring the quiet of today and the anticipation of some family time this weekend.

Oh Friday.  You are definitely my favourite.

Love, Me

I have spent longer than usual fighting it but OK, autumn, I surrender.  And I have to admit you are being quite lovely with your nice sunny weather and your pretty autumny colours.
So now I've surrendered, autumn, stick around for a bit.  Please?

A little flower music

Flower Music

I picked these pretty Japanese anemone from my garden today as I ease back into old, yet almost forgotten, routines.

September is always hard for me to get back in to.  But sometimes getting the first few things under my belt is all it takes and I think I'm nearly there.  Lots of images to get through from the holidays, but at least I have started to pick up the rhythm.

Looking forward to catching up on all my favourite blogs.  I loved the break, but I'm looking forward to seeing you too. :)

Rolling on

I am listening to the sound of the rain as I type - a constant in the past 36 hours or so.  It seems summer ended last week and a cold damp autumn arrived yesterday.

The Moo is at a friend's house today and aside from the sound of the rain, silence has fallen like a blanket.  I am relishing the few hours of quiet to sort out and catch up on a few things but my heart is heavy too.  Next week she will be back to school.  Year 4 and all that brings.  A well entrenched junior rather than a new one.  An old hand.

Every year I am dragged kicking and screaming in to September.  I love the summer and drink it up but it doesn't matter how much I embrace and enjoy it, I am never ready to embrace the return to routine and commitment.

So today I am starting gently.  Cleaning the sand from our sandals and digging out a favourite cardi.

We're not quite there yet and for that I am grateful.

Friday's Letter

Dear Summer,

The appearance of blackberries always makes my heart sink a little.  You are going awfully fast.  Please, please slow down.

We are off adventuring with friends and family.  And then, dear summer, you need to go verrry, verrrrrrrrrrrry sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

I am not ready for September.

Thank you in advance.

Ice-cream throwbacks

Truth be told I am terrible at lunch - making or eating - unless I'm cooking for the family or someone is making it for me.  And that hasn't happened.......so this is a latergram from Mallorca where I was delighted to discover that you can still get coconut ice cream in a coconut shell.  Let me tell you, we considered this  the HEIGHT of luxury in the early '80s.

I am delighted to report that they still exist and were enjoyed at lunch on several occasions on our recent visit (as well as the lemon ice cream in the lemon, also shown!).  A little more synthetic tasting than I remember, but I think that tells you all you need to know about my levels of sophistication in the early '80s. ;)

Participating in August break this month and linking it up as a Friday (re) Find.

Happy weekend. :)

Dear Friday

Ruby slippers.

Dear Shoes,

I have been looking for you for a really, really long time.  Dorothy shoes have been on my must have one day list since I first saw, and fell in love with,  the Wizard of Oz, aged about 6.

Oh, shoes, I am so happy I found you at last.

I am really looking forward to our adventures together.

Happy art!

The Moo loved one of her art lessons from last term so much, she wanted to teach it to me.  Yesterday we got the paints out and had some fun.  I love how clear she was about how she wanted to do it and how strong her opinions were.  Oh to have that clarity of vision!

Fortunately for me, you can't really go wrong with sunflowers and yellow.  They just shout happy!

Light Seeking

Reach for the Light

Friday's Letter

Dear Moo,

The end of another school year.  I can't believe it's over already.  And what an amazing year it's been.  I've loved seeing your confidence grow, your friendships form and your light shine so brightly.

Every day I marvel at your inquisitiveness, your creativity, your thoughtfulness.  Just when I don't think I can get any prouder, you say or do something and I think I might burst.

No matter what happens, keep being you.  You are amazing.  I love you.

Love, Mummy

A few more roses from my garden.  Casualties of the storm a couple of nights ago.

Playing with back lighting, metering and lightroom for Be Still 52.

Wednesday, 9 July 2014

When I was 5 I wanted to be fairy.
When I was 8 I wanted to be a ballerina
When I was 10 I wanted to be a doctor
When I was 12 I wanted to be 16
When I was 16 I wanted to be 18

I thought I would work in an art museum.
Then I thought I'd work in publishing.
Then I thought I'd teach
Then I worked in the film industry.

To date, nothing has worked out how I imagined it would.
But that's life, no?
And I've learned so much from the unexpected turns life has taken.

The biggest thing I've learned, though, is that whilst ambition has it's place, life is about change, about adapting to those changes and finding joy wherever you find yourself - and often in places you never even thought to look.

So these days my ambition is pretty simple: Lead a life that's as simple and joyful as possible for me and for my family.

And finally, finally I can say I am really starting to meet my ambitions.

Be Still and Know

Today I am:

Ignoring my giant to do list and playing with these pretty roses in my garden....the ones I didn't expect to see as even a professional gardener looked at them a couple of months ago, shook his head and said "hmmm, they're struggling aren't they..."

Excited for the holidays - school's out in a couple of days.

Preparing for another art fair on Saturday.

Feeling very calm considering the amount I still have to do.

Trusting it will all come good......

I love these pretty roses.  They smell gorgeous and remind me of the summers I used to spend picking up fallen rose petals and making 'perfume' with them.  Lots of half filled buckets of water and rotting petals that I honestly thought would make divine perfume that I could put in fancy bottles and bestow as luxurious gifts.

I miss those days.

There's a rather lovely link up at Circle of Pines called the year in books where you announce which book(s) you plan to read that month - hopefully do - and then come back and give your opinion on them.  I look at it longingly every month but lately I've been terrible at finishing anything, including books, so I haven't yet participated.

However, this is the month!  We are going away for a week and I am confident I will get through at least one book.  Especially as it's not too long, ha! I keep seeing rave reviews for The Vacationers so I thought it would be a good one to take away with me - the book is set in Mallorca which is where we're going so I am taking that as a sign too. ;)  I bought the Anne Lamott at a charity shop today because, well, it's Anne Lamott and I've never read anything of hers that I haven't loved.  I read the first chapter in a coffee shop on the way home and I'm feeling pretty confident about finishing that one too.

So there we are.  Click on the link to check it all out - there is a recommended reading list so lots of lovely inspiration.

And I'd love to know, what are you reading?

Adventures in processing

Still life

Having some fun in lightroom over at Be Still 52.  Dark and moody is the theme, which is quite a contrast to these pretty blue, light catching flowers but always interesting to see where you can go with it.

Happy Wednesday.

Friday's Letter

The colours of Southbank

Dear London,

You are so pretty and so fun.  The perfect place to lift the spirits and spark some inspiration.  And all a short train ride away.

The Southbank - one of my favourites anyway - was looking particularly colourful and gorgeous.

I must remember that you lovely London, such an amazing source of  inspiration, are almost on my doorstep and I can jump on the train anytime, I don't have to combine it with a boring chore.  I can just do it for fun!

See you soon, London.  You rock.

Outside in

At little outside is in and sitting on my sideboard.  Peonies are so pretty.

I'm on day 8 of my 21 day juice challenge and I must say I'm feeling pretty good.

Creatively, though,  I'm a little uninspired.  Stuck in a rut and in danger of playing the comparison game.  I keep thinking I'd like a new lens to play with or a different camera.  But I know that isn't the answer.

So today, I'm on the search for inspiration.

How about you?

Friday's letter

Dear Week,

Hey, you were a good one. Yay!  Except for the disastrous diy day, but the less said about that the better.....

This week I:

Started the 21 day juice challenge inspired by Kim.  I'm actually making smoothies rather than juicing (LOVE my nutribullet) and just to clarify it is NOT a juice fast - we are committing to adding it to our diet every day for 21 days and sharing a shot on instagram (#21dayjuicechallenge).  So far so good although if you follow me on instagam (@catchingsundust) you will know some smoothies are prettier than others....
Join us?

Went shopping with a friend and came back with clothes that
a) make me feel good
b) make me feel like ME!

Saw the Etsy ad on UK TV - and got myself a personalised one here:

Started this course with Xanthe Berkeley - I have big plans for the summer. :)

So week, thanks for being amazing and let's hear it for the weekend.

Have a good one. :)

Dear Friday

Dear Interweb,

Usually I love you but a stolen image has made you distinctly less fun this week.

I know it's people really and you are only as good as the people who use you.  But it still makes you a little boring.

Oh well.  Most of you makes me happy.

Onwards and upwards.
