Books and Inspiration

Truth for anyone is a very complex thing.  For a writer, what you leave out says as much as those things you include.  What lies beyond the margin of the text?  The photographer frames the shot; writers frame their world.
Jeanette Winterson, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?

I'm currently reading Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?  A totally inspiring book and so beautifully written.  It is the memoir of writer Jeanette Winterson.  Absorbing, shocking, funny, spirited, profound and I love how she has infused it with thoughts on life and the power of the written word.

The copy I am reading belongs to the library but there are parts of it that I want to underline and make notes in the margin. (As I write that I can hear my mother's voice telling me you should NEVER write in books!).  It's one of those books that will stay with me for a long time, requires a place on my bookshelf and which I'm sure will be further quoted here.

Which books inspire that for you? I'd love to know..... :)

Friday's Letter

Rainbow
Three things in human life are important:  the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.
Henry James

Dear You (yes, YOU! lovely reader),

I've been thinking about blog land and all these amazing connections we make.  And I wanted a way of saying thank you to you and maybe making the world a little kinder and spreading a little love.  This is something I've seen on a few blogs now and a friend is doing it locally too and I just thought it was a rather lovely idea so....

The first five commenters on this post will receive a surprise from me at some point during this calendar year.  It might be anything - a book, a ticket, something handmade, a postcard, a letter.....absolutely anything.  It will come with no warning and as the mood takes me

There are no strings at all.  All you need to do is comment and then email me your address (my email address is under my photo on the right hand side bar).  I'll email you a confirmation so you know I've got the information. And it's open to everyone, worldwide.

Whether or not you are one of the first five, if you like this idea please pass it on.  Let's make 2014 the year of kindness.

So, what are you waiting for?  Leave me a comment. :)

Love,  Me

Happy Friday. :)

Thursday (because I can't think of another title....)

Blue anemone

Black and white anemone

Floating

Cancelled meetings and waiting in for deliveries has given me little more time than I expected today so I've been at home, escaping the rain and having a play (though not with blog titles, obviously... ;).

The no sugar thing is going OK but I've realised that I need to find some snacks to make for when the cravings hit - I've been fine up to now but the last couple of days have been tricky.  For those that have asked, I'll explore the snack making a bit and then post about the books/recipes etc that I've been using. :)

Happy Thursday!

Permission slip

I saw this quote by Susan Cain (from her book Quiet) a few days ago on facebook and it really sums up how I'm feeling at the moment:

Stay home on New Year's Eve if that's what makes you happy.  Skip the committee meeting.  Cross the street to avoid making aimless chitchat with random acquaintances.  Read.  Cook.   Run.  Write a story.  Make a deal with yourself that you'll attend a set number of social events in exchange for not feeling guilty when you beg off.

It is making the most effective permission slip. :)

Ordinary Days

We are back to grey today.  So I have been seeking colour where I can in this little space of mine.  We are back to regular routines and although I hate the transition, there is something comforting and familiar in the return.

These are the images which are today's ordinary for me:

Sending you some mid-week love for your ordinary days.

Texture Tuesday

Tulips

And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should
Max Ehrmann

I am longing for spring.  These tulips are lovely and full of promise yet I sense we're not there yet - which was my prompt for my processing.

However, the sun is shining and I am off out and about to make the most of it. I'm on day 2 of my no (added) sugar diet and actually it's going OK.  No cravings, though I did feel a bit rubbish last night - nothing that an early night didn't sort out though.  Bread-making is on the list for later today (I had no idea sugar is added to most supermarket bread!).  I'm a bit of a novice, so keep you fingers crossed for me!

Happy Tuesday. :)

Friday's Letter

Selfie

Dear Body,

I know, I know.  I hear you loud and clear.  Reboot time.

Ugh.  The second I know I am avoiding something is the second that thing becomes all I can think about.

But it's time.

Fresh air, no sugar, more water, actually DO my yoga workout, early nights, lots of fresh fruit and veg.

I know.

But it'll be worth it.  Won't it?

Apologies in advance for the grouchiness.

Love, Me

Colour Story

Red splash

On my sideboard today.

A little bit of colour on a dreary grey day.

Back to school, back to routines.

Sigh.

A splash of red to combat the blues.

Friday's Letter

It FINALLY stopped raining!

Dear 2014,

I feel like I need to whisper so I don't scare you off.  This new year feels full of promise.  Scaring you off so early would not do at all.

I am finding everyone's lists of things to do this year fantastic to read and so inspiring.  Yet when I come to write my own I am frozen.

I think for this year I need to let it just be.
For you to  reveal yourself gently and gradually.
No big lists, no big plans.
To keep doing what I love and to keep loving it.
That way I hope we will grow together, steadily and organically.

I really hope that's not just a gigantic cop out by me.

I guess we'll find out.

Love, Me

Starting Gently with a New Word

Own your Story

So, here we are.  2014.  I'm not sure how it happened, but here we are anyway.

I'm starting this new year gently.  Happy to put the glitzy Christmas stuff away and welcome a fresh start.  A bit of spring cleaning, a bit of looking back and taking stock and very gently looking ahead and setting some goals for the new year.  No lists, no massive resolutions.  Gently building on what has gone before.

Last year my word was brave.  And through that word I finally opened my Etsy shop and started talking and thinking about  myself as a photographer and artist.  Added to that a fair bit of bravery was required all round the family with new schools, new jobs and lots of change.  Brave served me (and us) well.

As my words before (2012 and 2013), my word for this year found me (around October time) and pursued me relentlessly until I accepted it.  To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure what my word means for me yet.  But I am taking it on trust that this is what it is meant to be and that it will reveal and unfold itself as the year goes on.  Even writing that last sentence feels like a pretty major (and dare I say, brave) shift for me.

My word for 2014 is story.

Thank you for all your support, comments and inspiration during 2013.  I'm looking forward to sharing more of that this year and I hope you'll join me on this little adventure and be part of this story too. :)

And finally, leaving  you with my favourite image of 2013.  A familiar sight in our house.  I can't tell you how much her love of books makes me happy.

early morning reading

Wishing you all a very happy new year.  Do you choose a word for the year?  I'd love to hear it, please share in the comments. :)
