When I was 5 I wanted to be fairy.
When I was 8 I wanted to be a ballerina
When I was 10 I wanted to be a doctor
When I was 12 I wanted to be 16
When I was 16 I wanted to be 18

I thought I would work in an art museum.
Then I thought I'd work in publishing.
Then I thought I'd teach
Then I worked in the film industry.

To date, nothing has worked out how I imagined it would.
But that's life, no?
And I've learned so much from the unexpected turns life has taken.

The biggest thing I've learned, though, is that whilst ambition has it's place, life is about change, about adapting to those changes and finding joy wherever you find yourself - and often in places you never even thought to look.

So these days my ambition is pretty simple: Lead a life that's as simple and joyful as possible for me and for my family.

And finally, finally I can say I am really starting to meet my ambitions.

Linking up with writealm.

  1. Oh, I couldn't agree more. It feels good to get to this space where you just know, doesn't it?

  2. Such wonderful wisdom - it all about living a life of joy, yes? And I had to smile in remembrance at your desire at 12 to be 16; then 18 - isn't that the way it is as a teenager? We just know that things will be better once we are older. Love your profusion of wildflowers.

  3. I love this so much and your ambitions now are wonderful...the ones that truly matter for your family : ))

  4. You have a wonderful ambition! Great writing!

  5. You are too young to be so wise and self-aware! As I read your words, I tried to insert my own ambitions in each time frame, but I honestly can't remember anything specific before early adolescence. Like you, none of those ambitions were realized, but I'm more than satisfied with how things have worked out--the only exception being that I would like more time to devote to creative pursuits.

  6. What a wonderful post, and beautifully expressed.

  7. Words of wisdom...I imagine it's wonderful to have all those ambitions when you are young, I remember a few of mine. Lovely post and accompanying picture.
